Major Areas of Research
UPH ophthalmologists conduct research activities in areas that are of particular relevance to the Desert Southwest, including seniors, Native Americans and Hispanic Americans. Current research also involves finding the cause of macular degeneration, identifying risk factors of retinal tears, and studying how well antibiotics work within the eye.
The Southwest Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) Research Program is dedicated to retinal disease, specifically the elimination of AMD. The program is working towards better treatments, early diagnosis, and understanding of the molecular causes of AMD.
The Glaucoma Research Program conducts research on medications, surgical implants, genetics, and screening technology for glaucoma, the second leading cause of blindness in the U.S.
