Infectious disease is the section of medicine dealing with diseases caused by microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, and viruses that enter, grow and multiply in the body. 

The University of Arizona Medical Center physicians offer diagnosis and treatment of HIV/AIDS, malaria, valley fever, meningitis, tuberculosis, tropical diseases and many other infectious diseases.  Infectious disease physicians and faculty at the UA College of Medicine have been providing care to individuals with HIV since 1981.

Community Outreach
 
Infectious Disease faculty work closely with the media to educate the community on current infectious diseases.  Additionally, the Special Immunology Program conducts an HIV/AIDS information workshop at junior and senior high schools.  The Arizona AIDS Education and Training Center provides outreach to health care professionals and other community agencies on HIV-related issue throughout the state of Arizona. 

Major Areas of Research

The University of Arizona Medical Center infectious disease faculty conduct research in infection control, HIV patient care and the molecular biology of fungal and parasitic infections.
