Fellowships
As part of our commitment to lifelong learning and professional development, The University of Arizona Department of Emergency Medicine offers several fellowship opportunities for sub-specializiation. If you are interested in applying for a fellowship position, please contact us.
Research: The research fellowship is a 2-year, supervised career development experience to give EM physicians the knowledge and skills to advance the state of the art of Emergency Medicine. Graduates of the fellowship will be prepared to compete for extramural funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) or other organizations. The experience is tailored to the individual's background and needs and will consist of a candidate-specific mix of didactics, clinical training and focused research projects, culminating in the development and submission of an NIH Career Development Award ("K series") grant. Contact: Kurt Denninghoff (kdenninghoff@aemrc.arizona.edu).
Clinical Scientist Program: The Clinical Scientist Program (CSP) is a unique 2-year career development experiencing that prepares EM physicians to become effective scholar-clinicians. Foundational coursework in biostatistics, research methods, ethics and grantsmanship is interwoven with direct patient care and mentored project development. The additional structure is particularly suited to those who have an interest in research but do not have a research-related degree (e.g., PhD). At the end of the CSP, candidates will be prepared to effectively compete for extramural funding. Contact: Sam Keim or Kurt Denninghoff. (sam@aemrc.arizona.edu or kdenninghoff@aemrc.arizona.edu)
Sports Medicine: Offered jointly with the Department of Family Medicine, this one-year fellowship will train the EM physician to effectively manage sports-and work-related injuries. A combination of clinic experiences and team physician work will be interspersed with Emergency Department duties. Contact: Anna Waterbrook (awaterbrook@aemrc.arizona.edu).
Medical Informatics: This one or two year fellowship will give the EM physician a firm grounding in Medical Information Systems and their effective use in patient care, quality assurance and research. Contact: Ben Munger (bmunger@aemrc.arizona.edu).
